Foundations of East Chicago

Is it ever too early to start thinking scholarships?

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

PURPOSE

Throughout the calendar year, Foundations of East Chicago provide several opportunities for both non-profit organizations and individuals to apply to the Foundations of East Chicago (Foundation) for financial assistance for operating programs and/or projects which improve the quality of life for East Chicago and its residents.

The Foundation is specifically hoping to fund programs which will address the goals outlined in our Strategic Plan. The Plan identifies six areas of focus which are summarized as follows:

  • Education: Programs or projects which address improving the quality of educational achievement of East Chicago students.
  • Public Safety: Programs or projects which address crime or public safety issues in East Chicago.
  • Youth Development: Programs or projects whose purpose is to improve the social, physical and/or emotional skills of East Chicago’s youth.
  • Health: Programs or projects which improve the quality of health education, practices and/or services for East Chicagoans.
  • Family Support: Programs or projects which help strengthen the East Chicago Family unit.
  • Financial Independence: Programs or projects that assist East Chicagoans to become financially independent through job training, job creation or money management skills.
  • Community Economic Development: As part of Financial Independence, programs or projects which help East Chicago improve its communities and neighborhoods.

Grants which address one or more of these focus areas above will receive a higher priority with regards to funding consideration. The application must clearly represent how each focus area is addressed. Applications that fail to achieve this will lessen their chances for receiving funding.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Each applicant must comply with the following requirements:

  • Your organization must be a recognized 501 (c)(3) organization.
  • Your organization is in good standing with the Foundations of East Chicago.
  • Your organization is located in East Chicago.

EXCEPTION

If an agency is located outside of East Chicago, the following are required:

  • The agency must operate the proposed program within East Chicago.
  • East Chicagoans must participate in the proposed program in a quantity commensurate with the amount of funds being requested.
  • Potential Foundation funding can only be used to benefit East Chicago citizens.

If programs do not meet all of the above-listed criteria, applications will be denied immediately.
